Contractor License Bond California - Complete Guide

By Asena Capital Insurance Services — Licensed CA Insurance Broker, CA Lic. #60085962026-05-115 min

Quick Answer

Every California CSLB-licensed contractor must file a $25,000 contractor's license bond with the Board. It is not insurance — it is a financial guarantee protecting consumers, subs, and employees against contractor misconduct. Annual premium for a contractor with good credit: $200–$500. Call (858) 925-9555 and we can issue and file the bond same business day.

What the Bond Is (and Isn't)

The CSLB contractor license bond is required under California Business & Professions Code §7071.6. It guarantees that you'll comply with the Contractors State License Law. If a valid claim is paid against your bond, you must reimburse the surety in full — and the claim becomes part of your CSLB record. The bond protects the public, not you. Source: cslb.ca.gov.

What Costs You Actually Pay

Premium is a percentage of the $25,000 face amount, set by your credit profile.

Credit profile Typical annual premium
Excellent (740+) $200 – $300
Good (680–740) $300 – $450
Fair (620–680) $450 – $700
Below 620 $700 – $1,500+ (some require collateral)

Estimates only — based on 2026 California surety filings.

How to File the Bond With CSLB

Once we issue the bond, the surety files it electronically with the CSLB. You'll see it appear on your license record at CSLB License Lookup within 24–72 business hours. Don't pay an outside service to file — your surety does it included.

When the Bond Renews

The bond runs continuously — there's no annual renewal date in the way insurance has. You'll pay your renewal premium annually. If you let the bond cancel for non-payment, the CSLB suspends your license the day the surety files cancellation.

What a Bond Claim Looks Like

A homeowner files a complaint with the CSLB. The CSLB investigates. If they find merit, they may direct the homeowner to file a bond claim with your surety. The surety pays valid claims up to $25,000 — and you reimburse the surety. Multiple claims can be paid against one bond up to the $25,000 aggregate; if exhausted, you must replace the bond before the CSLB lets you keep working.
