Quick Answer

Tools & Equipment Insurance (technically Inland Marine in carrier language) covers your tools and small equipment against theft, transit damage, and job-site loss. Most contractors carry pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting in coverage for pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting/year. GL and Commercial Auto do NOT cover stolen tools — this is the policy that does. Call (858) 925-9555 for timely binding.

What Inland Marine Covers

Despite the name, Inland Marine has nothing to do with boats — it's the legacy term for property that moves. For contractors, that means:

  • Hand tools and power tools
  • Small jobsite equipment (compressors, generators, ladders)
  • Materials in transit
  • Tools in your work truck overnight
  • Tools temporarily at a customer's site
  • Rented or leased equipment

It does NOT cover heavy equipment titled and registered separately (excavators, dozers, etc.) — those need a Contractors Equipment policy or Equipment Floater.

Why GL and Commercial Auto Won't Pay

  • General Liability pays for damage YOU cause to OTHERS — not your own property.
  • Commercial Auto covers the vehicle itself but excludes contents (tools).

A break-in at your overnight job-site truck leaves you with zero coverage unless you have Inland Marine.

Coverage Limits and Deductibles

Most carriers offer:

Coverage limit Typical annual premium
$10,000 schedule pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting
$25,000 schedule pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting
$50,000 schedule pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting
$100,000 schedule pricing varies by classification, payroll, operations, claims history, limits, and underwriting

Documenting Your Tools

Carriers want a schedule for items over $1,000 (serial numbers, photos, receipts). For items under $1,000, a "blanket" limit usually covers without itemizing. Keep an inventory spreadsheet and update it annually.
